Cosmic Vessel began in late 2024 as a relatively simple idea: create a custom class for Baldur’s Gate 3 that felt unique, immersive, and enjoyable to play.
At the time, there were no plans for a large expansion, an extensive team, or a long-term development journey. The focus was simply on designing interesting mechanics and exploring what could be achieved within the game's systems.
Like many creative projects, however, it quickly grew beyond its original scope. Every new mechanic raised new questions and started hinting at a narrative. Where did these powers come from? Who wielded them? How did they fit into the world of Baldur’s Gate 3? As those questions were explored, new ideas emerged. Storylines began to form. Characters took shape. Locations, equipment, visual effects, music, and narrative concepts gradually started to be discussed. What started as a custom class slowly became the foundation for something much larger.
Our goal has never been to create content that feels disconnected from Baldur’s Gate 3. Instead, we want Cosmic Vessel to feel like a natural extension of the game; something that respects the tone, style, and quality of the original experience while introducing new ideas and stories of its own.
One key aspect we want to do is to share an ongoing inside look of the development process. Why? The answer is simple - because the journey is part of the project.
Creative work often appears polished and complete by the time people see it. What isn't always visible are the countless revisions, experiments, discarded ideas, unexpected breakthroughs, and lessons learned along the way. We as modders don't work in the same ways as your AAA game studios, we don't have the same access to resources and personnel, so we have to forge our own path forward in development. Our aim here is to run the project in a way that is enjoyable to all involved, with as little stress as possible, whilst also trying to incorporate elements of structure and procedure you might find in an established game studio. This allows us to learn skills that will help us blend into the environments we want to dedicate our skills to.
By sharing development openly, we hope to give people a glimpse behind the curtain. Not just the finished result, but the process of creating a project of this scale.
Some ideas work immediately. Others require months of iteration. Some features evolve dramatically from their original concept. That's all part of development, and we believe it's worth sharing. After all, Cosmic Vessel isn't simply something we're building. It's a journey we're inviting others to follow as it takes shape.
Building a project like this takes a tremendous amount of time and effort, especially for a volunteer team. So why do it? Because we enjoy creating.
Every member of the team is here because they love bringing ideas to life. Some are developing new skills. Some are building portfolios. Some simply enjoy contributing to a project they're passionate about. Many of us are here because we love Baldur’s Gate 3 and want to create something meaningful for the community that has formed around it.
There is a unique satisfaction in watching an idea evolve from a rough concept into something tangible. Seeing artwork completed, systems functioning, characters taking shape, and stories coming together makes every challenge worthwhile.
At its heart, Cosmic Vessel remains what it has always been - something fun.
Cosmic Vessel is still growing, evolving, and taking shape every day. There is still a great deal of work ahead, but every step brings us closer to the experience we hope to create.
Whether you've found us out of curiosity, a love for Baldur’s Gate 3, an interest in modding, or a desire to contribute to the project yourself, we're grateful you've taken the time to learn about what we're building.
Thank you for being part of the journey,
We hope you'll enjoy watching Cosmic Vessel continue to grow on the road ahead!
